Located in the centre of the village, Hawkshead Methodist Chapel is open to visitors every day from 10am to 4pm. It is the oldest building still in use as a Methodist place of worship – it was converted from a fifteenth-century cottage in 1862, when a small group of local Christians worshipped at 'Union Chapel'. The benefactor was Mrs Satterthwaite. In 1926 the chapel was passed to the Wesleyan Methodist Conference.
It still looks much as it did then – the American harmonium, over 100 years old, is still playable and visitors are invited to play it.
Hawkshead has a team offering midweek prayer and chaplaincy, and a rolling programme of exhibitions.
